I finally received my new desk that was made from all either recycled or discarded lumber. My brother is very proud of the fact that my new desk is 'green', and so am I. I hope I'm getting this all right. The legs were made from an old door. He isn't positive of the type of wood, but it is very very heavy, and some of his woodworking friends think it may be Brazilian cherry. The top is 1 inch thick mahogany (was a 1 1/2 inch board) and he rescued it from the bottom of a woodpile that belonged to an old woodworker. The drawer front is birdseye maple, and it is from an old lamp table he thinks is probably from about the 5o's. The first picture is part of what he wrote on the back of the drawer. The hardware he rescued from a dumpster that he frequents, it belongs to a lumber yard, and he has gotten many treasures from it. The other day he had gotten 7 or 8 of these drawer pulls still in the packages, and solid brass. It looks nice in the pictures, but they don't do it justice, it is beautiful.
The thread stand he and my other brother made for me. I had only requested a scrap of lumber with some nails, but they nicened it up for me with my brothers woodworking tools. The metal dowels were rods that he cut and then smoothed with a grinder. The only mishap, was my younger brother nicked a piece of his little finger on one of the tools.
It was a nice weekend, as my youngest brother Martin, came with the table and stand (it was like Christmas in July, but presents only for me) and stayed for a couple of days and visited and did jobs for me that my husband has been unable to do, and we got to meet my oldest brother Vincent, for lunch yesterday and I got to thank him in person. I definitely hit the jackpot with my brothers, they are wonderful.

Those are wonderful gifts. You do have great brothers.
Lucky, lucky, lucky. My dad was a woodworker and so I know what I am talking about when I say that your brothers do really nice work! The table is absolutely beautiful. How much will you sell it to me for? (I know better!)
It's obvious your brothers think you are special. Very beautiful gifts they and your brothers are keepers.

That's a great desk. How wonderful to have such lovely brothers. As an only child I always wanted to have a brother. It was lovely that you were able to see both your brothers over the weekend, a real family get -together.
You are so lucky to have such talented loving brothers. It must be because you are a loving sister.

:0) Yes, I agree with everyone else----how INCREDIBLE of a gift you received from your brothers, who most likely, way back when sometime, drove you crazy and vice-versa; teasing each other, driving your parents crazy.....ahhhhhhhhhh...the memories!
Also....regarding your OC backing.....*chuckle*.....since you're open to receiving the "World's largest label" award, it may just happen :0)
That a gorgeous desk. What a talented brother you have!
What a lovely table and thread holder. What wonderful and loving brothers you have.
Wonderful desk....also like the signature.....talking with a friend today and I was saying I sign everything...I put little notes in things that are important so someday if I am not around people will know where they came from...what a treasure....
You ARE lucky in your siblings! Great desk!
Does your thread holder take the smaller sized spools, the larger sized ones, or both? You will have to take a picture of it full of thread. I'm sure it will look so pretty!!! Was it made to hang on a wall.....or sit propped on a desk?
I'm so pleased you appreciate your brothers, Candace - yes, you are blessed! Best wishes to you all - Lurline.
Candace - lucky you! Those are very special gifts from very special men! It's great that they love to do things for you. I have only one brother and he lives in charleville Queensland (Australia) which is a very long way from me!
I really love the way your brother uses recycled timbers etc - it is green but also gives your pieces a wonderfully unique history.
Take care
Vanessa
